Claudius "C.B." Claiborne grew up during the era of segregation in Danville, Virginia. Every day on his walk to junior high, he would stop at the railroad tracks that separated his neighborhood from the white neighborhood and line his pockets with rocks. The ones he didn't use to fend off the kids who would accost him he would drop back on his way home so that he would have a pocket full of rocks ready for the next day.
