Today's wild rice demonstration shows threshing, the second step in traditional processing. Threshing is typically done either in a hole lined with a hide or tarp or in a bucket or wash tub. Moccasin-clad feet grind off the outer husk of the rice in a motion that looks like a dance or jig; this is why threshing is also known as "dancing" or “jigging" the rice. This breaks the husks and separates them from the rice. Children are often enlisted, since too much weight can damage the rice kernels. V
