The NHL has hit the midway point of the 2024-25 season. Who are the front-runners for awards, plus the surprises and disappointments?
We’re right around the league’s halfway point which is a perfect time to check in on the major awards races. A lot has changed over the last five weeks. Not everything has changed — Connor Hellebuyck will probably win back-to-back Vezinas and someone from Florida deserves the Selke — but the other races have certainly seen some interesting movement.
The Blue Jackets (21-17-6) have won five straight and play the San Jose Sharks at Nationwide Arena on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; FDSNOH, NBCSCA). They will host the Detroit Red Wings in the 2025 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series at Ohio Stadium on March 1 (6 p.m. ET; ESPN, TVAS-D, SN360).
Draisaitl posted an assist and four shots on goal in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Wild. Draisaitl has two goals and four assists during his four-game point streak. The 29-year-old forward set up Zach Hyman's tally in the first period.
The Oilers will host the conclusion of the season series Feb. 7 before eight players from the respective clubs -- also including Avalanche forward Artturi Lehkonen (Finland), Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm and forward Viktor Arvidsson (Sweden) -- convene for the 4 Nations Face-Off.
This is the obvious one. Nathan MacKinnon leads the NHL with 68 points, seven more than Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl in second place. Also of note, he’s first in points per game at 1.58, narrowly ahead of the Art Ross winner last season, Tampa Bay’s Nikita Kucherov at 1.57.
