The countdown to congestion pricing in New York City is over. Drivers now must pay a toll to enter Manhattan south of 60th Street.

Drivers entering Manhattan on Jan. 5 now pay a $9 toll as part of a revised congestion relief plan that was approved by the MTA board. While most drivers will pay the full announced price, some vehicle owners could qualify for discounts and exemptions.

New York City kicked off the first congestion pricing program in the US, part of an effort to reduce the number of vehicles in the world’s most traffic-clogged urban area while raising money for transit infrastructure.

Congestion pricing is making a comeback in New York City after Gov. Kathy Hochul announced plans to restart the controversial program. The plan will start as scheduled on Sunday after a judge ruled in favor of New York in a case brought by New Jersey in an effort to delay the plan.

Beginning Sunday, most motorists will have to pay $9 for driving below 60th Street in Manhattan, as New York’s first-in-the-nation congestion pricing plan takes effect in an area traversed by 700,000 vehicles daily.

Congestion tolling is scheduled to start on January 5 in NYC, barring any last minute legal challenges. The path to this point has been long and confusing — so drivers have many questions about the MTA’s plan to reduce congestion and raise funds for mass transit improvements.

The toll applies to the most congested part of Manhattan, south of Central Park, below 60th Street and cost drivers $9 a day.
