Though Mendocino is a small village, there's plenty to explore in town. With cabin rentals & lodges in the nearby hills and coastal towns. Don't forget to pause & enjoy the views.Full review by SageTraveler

Mendicino is beautiful. We stayed in Little River at SCP Mendocino Inn and Farm and loved every second of it. The front desk staff was so friendly and the rooms, the bed, the grounds - all spectacu…Full review by takemeawaydenver

Was just visiting from Idaho and it was overcast but still beautiful. I would think it is nice in September, but a ranger told us October was beautiful. Check out state parks and side streets. We are Geocacher’s and found some amazing places off the beaten path.
Suggested Points of interest in and within 2 hour drive of Point Arena? What are effects of fires east of coast?

Hi, My family drove to Mendocino from Oakland on August 4 and, at that time, did not encounter any forest fires. We then drove up the California coastline into Oregon without incident. After driving from Oregon to see Crater Lake, we then headed from Crater Lake to Redding where we were going to stay the night on 8/17. At that time, we did not encounter any fires until we started down Interstate 5 towards Redding. As we proceeded south (and it was night time), we could smell strong odors of smoke, and at several points west of the highway, we actually could see fires burning high in the distance. When we arrived in Redding, there was a pronounced haze on the city streets we travelled that looked like fog but smelled like smoke. We stayed the night, and the next morning, the hotel clerk told us that the ghost town we were going to visit near Redding had been burned down. When we left Redding going south on Interstate 5 towards Oakland, it took awhile to get clear of the smoke haze. The haze was not thick enough to prevent us from driving. That was our experience at the time. To better plan your trip around the forest fires, I strongly recommend you visit the fire#ca#gov website and click on their Google Statewide Fire Map link. Route 128 going to Mendocino was a scenic drive and Mendocino is nice place to visit. It is a quaint and scenic town with upscale and downscale shops. A short drive north to Fort Bragg, you might try beachcombing at Glass Beach especially if you have kids. Just don't get your expectations up on finding large pieces of beach glass on the surface. (You'll most likely have to dig to get something). As a previous reviewer noted Murder She Wrote and Mendocino, Bodega Bay is where Hitchcock filmed scenes from his movie "The Birds". Best Wishes on a safe and terrific vacation. California is a beautiful state with many vacation opportunities. p.s. God bless the firefighters and other emergency personnel.
We will be driving down the coast with our 15 year old son. Are there any suggestions on what to do that he would enjoy? :) Thanks!

It depends on what he likes to do. Lots of great hiking spots, beaches, points of interest. Currently there are seal moms and pups to be seen on Laguna Point just north of Ft. Bragg. Point Arena lighthouse is cool, and further south from Mendocino Ft. Ross is unique. The walks on the many rocky headlands are very cool. Definitely walk the Mendocino headlands for the seascapes, sink hole and arch.
How difficult is it to tour this coast and make lodging arrangements last minute? Thanks all. BZT

Thanks one and all. We will probably be doing this trip in June--busier time, I'm sure. Airbnb is always an option, but since we likely won't be in one place very long, the fees might outweigh the advantages. Anyway, it sounds like I need to look in to this. Will look in to Florence. Thanks again.
